It seems that the Japanese are taking major and hard decisions in their strategy to conquer new markets in the auto industry and in the pursuit to reinvent themselves: at the same time with 2 important mergers (Renault-Nissan Group with Mitsubishi and Toyota with Suzuki) two important (and iconic) models are at the end of their career.

So, following this drastic new strategy combined with the fact that the medium sedan market dropped precipitously, Toyota is considering to no longer create a replacement for the current Avensis.

After Honda Accord, Toyota Avensis (another player in medium sedan segment) could leave Europe because of declining sales and the general decline of this market.

The Japanese seem to want to be a competitor in the crossover segments more because it’s a known fact that in Europe, customers increasingly prefer SUVs. That means that this segment is growing at the expense of the others, especially since many customers would buy an SUV instead of an Avensis.

The Japanese model was first introduced in Europe in 1997 to fight the big names back then: Opel Vectra, Peugeot 406, Volkswagen Passat and Ford Mondeo. Avensis's fate is questionable because the current generation is approaching the end of its career and rumors of a replacement are increasingly bleak.

In an interview with AutoExpress, Johan van Zyl, head of Toyota Europe, said: "We look at this segment and its evolution and raise ourselves some questions. We are extremely satisfied with the performance of Avensis now, the product is profitable for us. But we wonder whether the next step should be a D-segment sedan or something else. "

That "something else" might be an SUV, because Toyota, like other manufacturers, is trying to take maximum advantage of the boom of this segment. In addition, Toyota does not have a very generous SUV offer on the market.

There is Toyota RAV4, Toyota Land Cruiser and maybe, in the near future, we would get acquainted with Toyota C-HR. But there is room for another SUV, and its debut may take place by the end of this decade.
